Our sustainability promise

As a specialist art materials retailer, we are in a unique position: every day we choose which brands to support, how we ship orders and which resources we consume behind the scenes. Our promise is to favour safer, more responsible products, minimise waste throughout our supply chain, and keep improving transparently year after year.
We collaborate with brands that invest in sustainable forestry, recycled materials, safer formulations and community projects, and we aim to grow this list each year.

Safer for artists

We prioritise products with clear safety information, lower toxicity where possible, and responsible labelling so you can work more safely in your studio or classroom.

Kinder to the environment

From recycled and recyclable packaging to lower‑impact product ranges, we look for ways to reduce emissions, waste and resource use at every step.

Fair partnerships

We prefer suppliers who demonstrate fair and equitable business practices and show concrete commitments to sustainability in their own operations.

Products & materials we choose

We continuously review our product range to highlight options that are better for both artists and the environment, without compromising on performance.

Lower‑impact and responsibly sourced ranges

We highlight ranges made with responsibly sourced wood, such as pencils using certified forests (FSC or PEFC), and packaging with recycled content.
We curate water‑mixable oils, low‑odour solvents and alternatives that reduce harmful fumes in the studio.
Where possible, we favour brands that publish clear sustainability or environmental reports and improve their materials and packaging over time.

Transparency for artists

Cleaning products, solvents, sprays and heavy‑metal colours can have specific handling and disposal requirements. We always aim to provide safety data sheets or clear product information where available, and we encourage you to follow ventilation, storage and disposal guidance recommended by manufacturers.

Packaging & shipping

Orders from Art Paint Shop are packed to protect your materials while keeping packaging as minimal and recyclable as possible.
If you receive non‑recyclable packaging from us, please let us know so we can review it with our suppliers.

Packaging

  • We aim to use cardboard boxes and paper padding that are 100% recyclable wherever possible.
  • We avoid unnecessary plastic where we can and reuse clean inbound packaging materials for outbound shipments when appropriate.
  • Any plastic bags or protective films we still use are regularly reviewed as we search for better alternatives.

Shipping

  • We work with logistics partners who actively reduce fuel use and emissions and increase recycling in their operations.
  • We group items into as few parcels as possible to avoid unnecessary shipments.
  • We encourage standard shipping over express where timing allows, as this often enables more efficient route planning and consolidation.

Our operations & energy use

Even as an online‑focused business, our day‑to‑day decisions matter—from the energy used in our office and storage spaces to how we manage electronic equipment and waste.

Electrical equipment

We try to extend the life of our devices and reuse or refurbish equipment whenever possible before considering replacement.

Waste & Recycling

We are working towards reduced waste and higher recycling rates in all areas of our business, including office supplies and warehouse materials.

Energy use

We will progressively switch to more efficient lighting, hardware and hosting solutions, and review energy providers where feasible to support lower‑carbon options over time.

Safe & responsible painting

Many traditional art materials contain solvents, resins and pigments that require careful use. We support safe, informed painting practices that protect you, the people around you and the environment.
We regularly share tips and guides on safer painting and cleaner studio practices in our blog and newsletters.

In your studio

  • Work in well‑ventilated spaces when using solvents, sprays or mediums.
  • Wear gloves and, where recommended, masks when handling strong cleaners or sanding surfaces.
  • Avoid eating or drinking where you are working with paints and solvents.

Cleaning and disposal

  • Never pour solvents, medium residues or heavy‑metal pigments directly down the sink. Collect and dispose of them according to your local regulations.
  • Wipe brushes with cloth or paper before washing to reduce residues in the water.
  • Let solvent residues settle, then carefully decant the clearer solvent for reuse where possible.

How you can help as an artist

Every choice, from the brush you pick to the way you dispose of your cleaning water, can contribute to a more sustainable art world.
  • Choose lower‑impact ranges when they fit your practice, such as water‑mixable oils or recycled‑content papers.
  • Reuse packaging for storage or shipping artwork before recycling it.
  • Plan your orders to reduce partial shipments and returns.
  • Share feedback with us about products or packaging you would like to see improved.

FAQs

No. Traditional art materials, especially certain solvents and pigments, can still be hazardous or require careful use. Our aim is to clearly label safer alternatives and provide information so you can make informed choices.

We are working on improved filters and tags (for example, “recycled packaging”, “water‑mixable”, “certified wood”) to make these ranges easier to find in the shop.

At the moment, our focus is on direct reductions in packaging, waste and energy. We will only consider offsetting alongside real reductions, not as a substitute for them.

Many manufacturers publish safety data sheets and guidance on their websites. We also recommend consulting your local waste authority’s advice for hazardous waste and studio chemicals, and reading our blog articles about safer painting practices.
