Artwork photography guide

Artwork Photography Guide

Master the art of the "Digital Twin." Capture gallery-ready photos of your work using just your smartphone.

01

Kill the Glare

Never use your flash. Position your art near a window with indirect light. If your varnish is reflecting, hang a white sheet over the window to diffuse "hot spots."

02

The 2x Zoom Trick

Don't stand close. Move 6 feet back and use your 2x optical zoom. This prevents "fish-eye" distortion and keeps the canvas edges perfectly straight.

03

Parallel is Perfection

Ensure your phone lens is exactly parallel to the art. Use the Grid Lines setting on your camera to avoid "keystoning" (uneven edges).

Smartphone Settings Cheat Sheet

FeatureSettingWhy?
FlashOFFFlash flattens texture and creates white spots.
Focus/ExposureLOCKTap & hold your screen until "AE/AF Lock" appears.
HDROFFHDR can make professional pigments look "neon" or fake.
Self-Timer2 SECEliminates "camera shake" caused by tapping the shutter.
💡 Pro Tip for art-paint.shop Artists:

To show off texture (impasto work), move your light source slightly to the side. This creates subtle shadows that make the paint look 3D on screen.

Art Shipping & Packaging Checklist

Ensure your masterpiece arrives safely. Follow these professional archival packing standards.

Paintings

Flat Art & Canvases

  • Glassine Paper: Wrap the face in Glassine. Unlike plastic, it won't stick to the paint surface.
  • Corner Protectors: Use cardboard or foam corners to prevent frame/canvas dings.
  • The "Wet" Rule: If oil is "touch dry" but fresh, use a shadow-box frame or "risers" so nothing touches the surface.
  • Bubble Wrap: Wrap the entire piece in at least 2 layers (bubbles facing OUT).
  • The Sandwich: Place between two sheets of heavy-duty corrugated cardboard or foam core.
Fragile

Ceramics & 3D Works

  • Internal Support: Fill hollow items (vases/bowls) with soft tissue paper to prevent internal stress.
  • Double-Boxing: Place the item in a small box, then place that box inside a larger box with 3 inches of padding between them.
  • The Shake Test: Once packed, gently shake the box. If anything moves, add more packing peanuts or paper.
  • Tape Method: Use the "H-Tape" method—seal all seams of the box, not just the center.
  • Labeling: Mark "FRAGILE" on all six sides, but never "Expensive Art."

Studio Safety & Organization

🛡️

Studio Safety & Organization

Maintain a healthy, efficient, and archival creative environment with our essential studio protocols.

01

Health & Air

Always maintain a cross-breeze when using solvents. Store oil-soaked rags in a water-filled metal bin to prevent spontaneous combustion—a critical studio safety standard.

02

Climate Control

Winterize your studio by keeping liquid paints above 50°F (10°C). Emulsions can break down if frozen. Maintain 40-50% humidity to prevent canvas sagging or wood warping.

03

Tool Longevity

Store brushes horizontally to prevent water from rotting the wooden handles. Deep-clean ferrules monthly to maintain the "spring" and shape of your professional brushes.

Studio Maintenance Checklist

TaskFrequencySafety Note
Ventilation CheckDailyEnsure at least two points of air exchange.
Solvent SealImmediateUse gasket-sealed glass jars to prevent vapor leak.
Surface WipePost-SessionPrevent heavy metal dust (cadmiums/cobalts) buildup.
Inventory TempSeasonalMove liquid stock away from exterior cold walls.
💡 Studio Secret from art-paint.shop:

Apply a professional "barrier cream" to your hands before painting. It makes clean-up easier and prevents your skin from absorbing pigments and solvents during long sessions.
